AIT’s XMC-FC4 Fibre Channel interface integrated into Extreme Engineering XPedite7470 System for FC-AE-ASM Avionics Flight Applications

Avionics Interface Technologies (AIT), the premier fibre channel avionics interface supplier, now offers a fibre channel interface integrated with a rugged, high-performance single board computer, in partnership with Extreme Engineering Solutions, Inc. (X-ES). AIT and Extreme Engineering integrated AIT’s XMC-FC4 Fibre Channel interface board with Extreme Engineering’s XPedite7470 single board computer for this flight read turn-key solution. The board may be embedded into an Extreme Engineering XPand1000 3U VPX development system for development and later migrated to a rugged system.

“We now have an off-the-shelf, VPX-based solution for military aircraft with a Fibre Channel avionics databus interface,” stated Ken Bisson, AIT’s Vice President of Sales. “The AIT XMC-FC4 Fibre Channel avionics interface integrated with the Extreme Engineering XPedite7470 delivers both high-throughput and high-performance processing required by avionics Fibre Channel network applications. The integrated system is proven to work with a variety of Fibre Channel avionics protocols including FC-AE-ASM, FC-AE-RDMA, FC-AV, FC-AE-1553, and HS-1760. This integrated system enables AIT and Extreme Engineering to provide our avionics customers with an off-the-shelf, flight-ready, integrated SBC and Fibre Channel network interface solution that can be customized for their needs.”

AIT’s XMC-FC4 has two independent fibre channel ports Point-to-Point (PTP), switched fabric, and arbitrated loop topologies with line rates from 1Gbps to 4Gbps. Ports can be configured with copper or optical interfaces. The XMC-FC4 can be configured with up to 4 Gbytes of onboard memory for applications that require a lot of memory storage. The XMC-FC4 has been tested and supports a range of avionics protocols, including FC-AE-ASM, FC-AE-RDMA, FC-AV, and FC-AE-1553. It can also be configured as a Network Controller or Network Terminal for MIL-STD-1760E weapons bus applications.

The Fibre Channel Software Development Kit (SDK) bundled with the hardware features an application programmer interface and device driver for MS Windows, Linux, and VxWorks® operating systems.

The X-ES XPedite7470, is a conduction- or air-cooled 3U VPX Single Board Computer (SBC). The XPedite7470 is one of X-ES’s many standard form factor products based on the 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor. The XPedite7470 supports a quad core Intel® Core™ i7 processor at up to 2.1 GHz to deliver enhanced performance and efficiency, making it an excellent COTS product for deployed military applications.

“Many of our avionics customers are looking for our Single Board Computer solutions integrated with network interfaces and protocols for their flight-ready applications,” said Bob Senko, Extreme Engineering’s Director of Sales. “The AIT fibre channel interface with FC-AE-ASM protocol is one great example of seamlessly integrating Extreme Engineering’s high-performance processor with AIT’s high-speed avionics network interface. Our customers are always looking for an integrated solution that reduces their risk with guaranteed success. We are involved with several other avionics projects that require a fibre channel network interface, so having an integrated solution is a great value.”
