AIT Partners with Rugged Science for MIL-STD-1553 Integration
Sparks, MD — 4/22/2026
Rugged Science has partnered with Avionics Interface Technologies (AIT) to integrate MIL-STD-1553 connectivity into its military embedded computers and rugged rack mount server platforms, expanding support for mission-critical military and aerospace systems.
MIL-STD-1553 continues to serve as a backbone for communication across defense platforms where reliability and predictability are non-negotiable. Unlike high-bandwidth network protocols, 1553 is designed around deterministic communication, ensuring data is transmitted on a fixed, known schedule. This makes it well suited for coordinating time-sensitive systems such as flight controls, sensor fusion, and weapons interfaces, where timing consistency is critical.
Its dual-redundant bus architecture provides fault tolerance at the physical layer, allowing systems to maintain operation even in the presence of wiring faults or electrical interference. Combined with strong resistance to noise and long-standing adoption across legacy and current platforms, MIL-STD-1553 remains a critical standard for programs that demand stability over extended lifecycles.
Through this partnership, Rugged Science systems can be configured with AIT’s MIL-STD-1553 interface solutions via PCIe expansion across both small form factor military embedded computers and rugged rack mount platforms, including the NOMAD Series. This enables direct integration into existing avionics and mission system architectures without redesign, allowing programs to retain validated communication infrastructure while upgrading compute performance at the system level.
“MIL-STD-1553 environments are built around deterministic communication and long lifecycle requirements, which makes integration a challenge when upgrading compute,” said Noah Buchanan, Product Manager at Rugged Science. “By supporting 1553 over PCIe across both embedded and rack mount platforms, we’re giving customers a way to modernize processing capability without disrupting validated system architectures.”
“We are excited to have a compute partner that offers the long lifecycle support to meet the needs of our defense and aerospace customers,” stated Troy Troshynski, AIT Business Unit Manager. “Our partnership provides our common customer base with rackmount and rugged host compute options that align with our 10+ year MIL-STD-1553 products lifecycle.”
This partnership enables modern compute performance to be deployed within established MIL-STD-1553 architectures, preserving system integrity while advancing capability across defense platforms.
